A Global Call for Ethical Fashion

Fashion Revolution Week 2024 commenced on Monday, rallying individuals globally towards ethical and sustainable fashion practices. This week, the focus extends beyond clothing to the stories behind them and their impact on people and the environment.

Fashion Revolution Week transcends as a call to action, highlighting a decade of progress in the fashion activism movement. From April 15th to April 24th, individuals worldwide will engage in various activities to raise awareness and advocate for transparency in the fashion supply chain. If you're interested in participating or learning more, you can visit the Fashion Revolution website or follow their social media channels for updates on events and initiatives during Fashion Revolution Week. https://www.fashionrevolution.org/frw-24/

This year's Fashion Revolution Week, marking the movement's tenth anniversary, extends over ten days, symbolizing a deepened dedication to driving meaningful change. Originating from the profound impact of the Rana Plaza disaster, the event urges consumers to inquire,

"Who made my clothes?"

echoing the sentiments of Livia Firth, who advocates for mindful consumption by asking,

"Will I wear this at least 30 times?"

This emphasis underscores the crucial call for transparency throughout the fashion supply chain.

Despite the popularity of high street fashion brands such as TK Maxx, Primark, H&M, Zara and RiverIsland, as well as designer shops like Louis Vuitton and Mulberry, charity shops in Leeds remain actively committed to supporting ethical causes. This dedication is confirmed by a volunteer at the British Heart Foundation charity shop in the Merrion Centre.

According to the volunteer,

“Working at the shop brings them enjoyment, provides a daily routine, and fosters the development of customer service skills while also offering opportunities to learn new ones.”

 The shop manager emphasised

“The charitable nature of their organization, noting that all proceeds support research initiatives and advocate for upcycling.”

Furthermore, the manager expressed.

“aspirations for the shop to become a 10k store, with the overarching goal of directing all profits towards charitable endeavours.”

Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the fashion industry's resilience shines through in Fashion Revolution Week 2024. The movement emphasises the intersectionality of fashion activism, advocating for a holistic approach to systemic change.

International solidarity is crucial, with participation from 75 countries uniting to prioritize worker and environmental well-being. The theme, "How to be a Fashion Revolutionary," explores the essence of participation in driving social and environmental equity.

Fashion Revolution Week 2024 encourages diverse participation through various activities:

  • Engage with Fashion Revolutionaries worldwide and share your story using #WeAreFashionRevolution.

  • Attend workshops to develop skills in communication and community-building.

  • Collaborate with local teams and join initiatives like Mend in Public Day.

  • Support local events and campaigns, staying informed through social media and newsletters.

  • Utilise promotional materials to amplify advocacy efforts.

  • Contribute to funding the movement for a fair, safe, and transparent fashion industry.

In Farsley, Leeds, fashion enthusiasts are embracing sustainable practices through a SCRAP clothes swap event. Despite tickets being sold out, interested individuals can join the waiting list for a chance to participate.

Additionally, the Leeds Community Clothes Exchange is gearing up for its next event on April 27th from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Woodhouse Community Centre. For a fee of £3.50 per person, attendees can revamp their wardrobe without the need for prior booking; simply drop in and indulge in the fashion exchange experience!

Fashion Revolution Week 2024 calls upon you to imagine a world where fashion contributes to a positive collective ethos. Be part of the journey to reshape the fashion industry, one step at a time.
